This was a weird week. As you may remember, I had a day off last Monday which I used for a bunch of gaming and I didn’t bother to write my weeknotes on time. But well, now the time is up, and I shall recount the happenings and progress made, it felt like I was lazy all the time but also not? I don’t know.

🏭 There were a couple of rough moments at work this time, there was a software update that affected many things and we spent a few hours troubleshooting that issue. There was also a new workstation that needed to be setup and we spent a couple of days on that too.

🎨 Started adapting my Tokyo-Night/Arcticons theme for my Anbernic RG35XX SP running MuOS again, after it broke during an update. I can’t quite figure it out yet, as the locations of some files changed a bit, and there are also adaptations for different screen resolutions, but I won’t work on those just yet.

👤 Made a shiny new profile pic for me on my mastodon account—and some other places. It’s still pixel art, but with an isometric perspective, which I haven’t tried before. Alongside my high-res one, I was inspired to try to create one within the sprite size of Triangle Strategy or Final Fantasy Tactics. After figuring out how to do glasses (shamelessly copied from Julio, a TS character), I ended up preferring it as a profile pic over the more high-resolution version I did at first.

✒️ I finally did some cursive writing with my fountain pen today. These past couple of weeks time had been used on other less productive things, I have no excuses. My ink cartridge finally dried off and I have replaced it, at last!

🎂 It’s around this time a couple years ago that I started working at last! It’s been a pretty wild ride, but I think I’ve managed to get a bit more comfortable with my tasks and keep on learning. Sometimes it can get stale, or I lose focus, but I am working on it.
Reading

Erased: I suddently started and finished this manga by Kei Sanbe, in less than a day. It’s about a guy who can rewind time to avoid carastrophic events, although only by a couple minutes. However, somehow he’ll end up as a kid 18 years ago, to try and stop a serial killer back then and change his future at the same time. I really enjoyed it and it managed to grip me from start to finish. When it comes to detective/murder/thriller kinda stuff, I think Monster is still the best, but this one came really close.
-
Komi Can’t Communicate: After a few months, I finally returned to this manga, which got me started on reading at all way back when. I was getting confused with all the new characters and sideplots and losing thread of the main couple completely, but it seems like we are finally returning to that for a bit, and I’m looking forward to it!
Gaming
-
CrossCode: I finally returned to this game, and I had a fun time with it! I went to the first actual dungeon of the game as a lvl 15 with lvl 18 equipment, I managed to complete the whole dungeon in the span of a day (only like 3 hours) and well. I must admit I’m rather impressed. However, after playing so many block puzzles on Soul Reaver, I must say it sure is weird a 20+ years old game has better block-pushing mechanics, such as, you know, moving blocks sideways. Nitpicking aside, I did enjoy the puzzle design, although I got lost way too much time because I didn’t figure out I could shoot at a pretty obvious thing you can shoot. I did love the boss battle too! Cool stuff.
-
TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge: I went back to this beat’emup after Streets of Rage 4 and it was fun to see the similarities between both games. We went through a few stages, I played with the kid of some family friends and he was into it, but also he clearly wanted to show me the games he had on his own Switch.
-
Gang Beasts: As I was saying, this kid really wanted me to play this party game with him, and I must say it was kinda funny. It’s one of those funky physics-based games like Fall Guys or Human Fall Flat. They aren’t usually first choice, but I admit I had fun trying to avoid getting hit by random sharks jumping around at me.
-
Mario vs Donkey Kong: This is one of the best pick-up-and-play games on the GBA, and I have returned to it after quite a while. I played through the second and most of the third world and it’s been a good change of pace!
Around the web
I’ll be honest, the reason I took an extra day to write this is because I wanted to find more blogposts to share, but in the end I kind of didn’t feel much for other posts, here are some that I liked though.
- Alexandra Wolfe is on P&B! - The time has come! I’ve been following Alexandra for a while and it’s cool to take part on these interviews.
- the superiority complex of the screen minimalist - this is an important factor I haven’t touched upon much, but it’s true, just because you don’t use your phone, or just because the way you use it seems more productive, doesn’t give you the right to diminish others.
- old internet feeling - Elle has been exploring around cyberspace.online and shares some thoughts about this very new social media place. Looks interesting!
- Is Collecting Physical Games Worth It? (Part IV) - Wouter is too far gone (and me too to be honest).
Now when it comes to videos…
- I quit every streaming service, here’s what I use now - I really need to get back to selfhosting at some point…
- Ready Player One: An Empty Pit of Nostalgia and Misery - I don’t think it’s that bad, but the video still got me laughing.
- Desert Island Retro Games - What game would you take to a desert island hmm? Honestly, I may write a blogpost about that.
